READING
Current Unit: Unit 4: Historical Fiction
Reading: Number the Stars
Our reading program will be using a workshop model. The foundation of this program comes from Making Meaning. Additionally, this Making Meaning program is supplemented with Lucy Calkins Reading. Students will have independent reading time, guided groups, and word study/vocabulary activities (Words Their Way).
During reading, students participate in a full class mini lesson. After the mini lesson is complete students work in reading stations.
Our reading stations:
#1) Read to self: Students read silently.
#2) Reading response: Students respond to presented questions in their reading
journals (response due every week).
#3) Small group with Mr. B: Students meet with Mr. Besbeas at the back table. We
read various selections of text and students answer comprehension questions.
#4) I-Ready Reading Lesson
Words Their Way (Word Work): Done during a different period of time. Students practice letter patterns with spelling activities (word work) in four stations.
Our Word Work stations:
#1) Meet with Teacher (Lesson)
#2) Word Hunt
#3) What's the Meaning?
#4) Workbook Activity
